How Much Particulate Matter Is in Your Home, Office, or School?
Ambient fine particulate matter (PM2.5) is a major global health threat. Short-term PM2.5 exposure has been linked to substantial productivity losses from premature deaths across 1,066 locations in seven countries from 2000 to 2019. Research estimates that productivity-adjusted life-years (PALYs) lost to premature deaths increased by 2.70% for each 10-μg/m³ rise in PM2.5. Risks were higher among women, adults aged 15–44, and people in lower-middle-income areas.
Overall, 5.0% of PALYs lost from premature deaths were attributable to PM2.5, equal to an annual economic cost of US$21.5 billion. Lowering PM2.5 below the World Health Organization air quality guideline could prevent 3.5% of PALY losses and avoid US$16.7 billion in annual costs.
