How Long Until It's Gone - Excessive Waste Should be Everyone's Concern: Reduce, Recyle, Reuse
Well Building Connection is making awareness in our store at reasonable prices to help people develop habits of using reusable products vs single use.
WBC wraps all purchases with reusable microfiber cloths instead of tissue since most tissue ends up in landfills immediately after purchase and is not recyclable.
More than 13 billion pounds of paper towels are used in the United States each year. Most paper towels are made from virgin forest fiber. In order to manufacture one ton of paper towels, about 17 trees and 20,000 gallons of water are used and polluted in the process. That means a staggering number of 51,000 trees per day is needed to replace the amount of paper towels discarded every day by Americans.
Besides the large amounts of trees, water, and energy required, many different chemicals are used in the process of making paper towels including toxic products in order for the towels to stay durable when wet. In 2015, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) estimated that Americans generated about 7.4 billion pounds of waste consisting of paper towels, toilet paper, and tissues. Once in a landfill, paper towels release methane as they decompose. For those worried about the carbon footprint of paper towels, a household using 10 paper towels each day for a year generates 19 lbs of CO2 or the equivalent of driving a car for 173 miles.
